Cost of obesity in the US- A Sugar Tax?

In a  recent article in the AARP Bulletin, according to the CDC,1/3 of American adults and nearly 1/5 of children are obese.  This puts the health care cost of obesity in America at $190 billion.

And consider the consequences of this epidemic- diabetes, heart disease, stroke and many more maladies.
A new U of California study reports that a 1% per ounce tax on sweetened beverages would prevent nearly 2.4 million cases of diabetes, 95,000 cases of heart disease, 8,000 strokes and 26,000 premature deaths in the next decade. $13 billion is projected in annual tax revenues and $17 billion savings in health care costs over 10 years. The projected revenues would dissuade some from purchasing high sugared products and would also finance educational efforts against excessive use of these products.

Whether this passes or not the smartest thing to do is live a healthier lifestyle. And if you don't know where to start-call us.  We can help you get back on track.
